Crazy Egg 101: 3 Steps to a Better Website for your Customers

Welcome to Crazy Egg!

54% of visitors leave your website without visiting a second page. Depending on your industry (B2B) and the type of pages you’re creating (product pages, landing pages) the number can jump as high as 90%.

Traditional analytics tools are great at telling you what happened. Crazy Egg goes one step further and shows you why.

Since 2005, over 120,000 companies have used Crazy Egg to improve what’s working on their website, to discover what isn’t, and to test ideas on how to improve website experience and performance.

This 3-step guide will help you get the most out of your investment in Crazy Egg from Day 1; all with the goal of making your website better.

Step 1: Install Crazy Egg

Step 2: Create your First Snapshot

Step 3: Find Inspiration

Step 1: Install Crazy Egg

Heatmaps. Snapshots. User recordings. A/B tests. Install Crazy Egg on your website and the world’s first and most trusted tool for understanding audience behavior is fully at your disposal.

You can install Crazy Egg in three ways:

  1.  Cut and Paste
  2. Integrate
  3. Email a Friend

Log in to your account and click on Install Crazy Egg found along the left-hand side (blue menu).  You will be presented with some options for installation based on how your website is designed.  We cover scenarios from Shopify, to Drupal, to WordPress, to regular HTML (manual installation).  You will find helpful articles if you get stuck and you can always message our support team.

Why Install?  When you install Crazy Egg, you will receive customized recommendations to your website, based on your traffic and the behavior of your visitors.  If you don't install, you will miss out.

How long will it take?  To set up - 5 minutes.

To See Value?  1 hour to 1 day.

Crazy Egg starts analyzing your website and user behavior the moment we’re installed; but how much value you see and how quickly you see it ultimately depends on the volume of people visiting your website and the plan you select.

What’s next?  Choose the page(s) you want us to analyze and visualize for you.

Step 2: Create your First Snapshot

You can’t fix what you do not know or understand, right!?

Choose the page(s) you want to monitor and better understand and let Crazy Egg start analyzing the information for you. Crazy Egg Snapshots have four specific reports designed to help you answer four unique questions:

  1. Where are people spending time?

Review your customized Heatmap which uses a variety of colors to help you understand where people are spending time (red) and where they aren’t (blue).

  2. Where are people clicking?

Review your Overlay report to understand what Calls-to-Action people are most popular and most effective.

  3. Who are my best and most engaged customers?

Review your Confetti report, which documents every click on the pages you’re tracking, and allows you to further segment and organize them by referral sources, search terms, and more.

  4. Where are people abandoning my site?

Review your Scrollmap to get a feel for how far people are scrolling, and where people stop paying attention to your site and your content.

Why Snapshots?  Snapshots are the fastest way to get an in-depth understanding of how your visitors are behaving on a given page.  They help you identify where to focus your attention to make the biggest impact.

How long will it take?  To set up - 15 seconds.

To See Value?  A few minutes.

Get Snapshots up and running for each page in a few short clicks.   Create multiple or single Snapshots at a time.

Our visual approach to reporting on your data puts you in position to quickly pinpoint problem areas with your site and user experience, at-a-glance.

What’s next?  Sit back and relax while the data rolls in for you. Then onto Step 3: Find Inspiration.

Step 3: Find Inspiration

You will start to feel something when you look at your Snapshot reports.

- Excitement.  You can quickly identify an area of opportunity.

- Challenged.  Something you thought was obviously valuable was overlooked by your audience.

- Angry.  That you missed something that could have made the experience better.

But after the initial rush of emotion has settled, you will feel compelled and inspired to act.

Looking for more inspirations?  Turn on and dive into recordings!

Ready to test an idea?  Setup your first A/B Test and see what design converts more visitors on your page.
